An Experience with Live Chat! Really!

Had an interesting experience the other day with a service provider that my wife and I use quite often. We had to contact them over a discrepency on our bill and decided to do so via their online chat function. At first thought, we were under the impression that this would take no time at all really to work out. We were wrong.

Now, before I get into this story too deep, let me refresh you somewhat on the small fact that I too used to work as a CSR for a couple of fairly well-known web hosts in the last couple of years. I was tasked with online chat among other duties and worked as a remote. For you readers that don’t understand this last part, it means I worked from my home. ;) Loved the commute to work!

Anyway, having spent time in online chat or live chat as it’s also known, I understood the fact that there are simply times when the technician can get over-whelmed with visitors. See, usually the tech has others working with him/her so that the work flow can be as seamless as possible. This is optimum as depending on the company and it’s service/product, the more working in live chat, the better. On this particular occasion, it was most definitely NOT an optimum experience. Newspapers – Paper or Electronic, please?

There has been a lot of talk lately about newspapers going with paid-for-online-content over offering it for free as has been the norm for some time now. This is in effect something they’ve been headed for since the industry has been in dire straights economically speaking for a while.

The overall idea is to pad their income with online content by charging subscribers a fee. This way, they can get customizable content along with a few ‘perks’ delivered right to their virtual inbox or browser. This, along with paid subscriptions to the printed version would hopefully, add to their bottom line since it’s headed for the bottom anyway with the high costs of ink, paper, overhead, etc. on the constant rise. Re-evaluating my Social Network

Most people come up with some resolutions for the new year that most will never follow up on. They range from losing weight to saving more to doing better at something to who knows what else. We all tend to fall back on our set ways in a few weeks or so. I thought long and hard about what mine might be and decided on not spending as much time on the internet as I used to.

Now, THAT got your attention didn’t it? Actually, my intention is to eliminate the social networks that I gain no real benefit from in all reality. I won’t go on to mention them all here as most of the readers of this humble blog don’t even know where to find me on them. My reasoning however, is this: Why take precious time out of the day to scroll endlessly over postings that really have no interest for me in the first place? One such social network that has blossomed has become such a hodge-podge of add-on applications that it’s more like a carnival than a social networking app. But, hey! To each their own.

My idea is simple. To cull the networks that I’ve not really gained much benefit from in the past year. To keep the ones that have kept my interests peaked and inspired me to try new things as well as learn more about what interests me. This is not to say I’ve become snide or elitist but, more to the point, I’m becoming more focused on my interests and trying to fine tune them.

I like Twitter for it’s ‘real time’ updates. You can’t beat it IMHO. As things happen, it hits this social network almost immediately. I like my Google Reader for more in depth information that I can catch up on when I have the time. Tweetmeme has it’s place in my bookmarks as well for the technology tag. Alltop is a source for stories that cater to my interests too.

Music and Video interests are focused on Youtube, Hulu and Last.fm Pandora for the time being.

There are some blogs that I subscribe to that interest me in this mix that have to do with SEO, web hosting, GNU/Linux and friends whom I’ve made it a point to keep up with as their families grow and experience things in life. These I won’t let go of as they mean something to me.

It’s the time-wasters that I have nothing for anymore. The ones whose creators have been quoted as not caring for your privacy anyway, the ones that don’t do much more than leave another place on the ‘net for your private information to get scraped are on the chopping block. ;)

I may come across something that might prove interesting but it’ll be on a trial basis for a while to see if it actually allows me to benefit from it. Guess that may sound odd to some but hey! Like I said previously, I’m in this to gain knowledge and to share it when I can. I’d expect the same from anyone else.

So, if you had seen me on some other social network and now you don’t, my account closed…guess that means it was one of those that got the axe today and that I won’t be back. I kind of doubt that I’ll be missed. ;)

2009 was a year to remember

Happy New Year! For me, 2009 was a year of operating systems, installs, fretting over Windoze machines, job worries and generally, a year of deciding on the best way to go with a home network. Suffice it to say, it’s still a work in progress. ;) Of course, there were other things 2009 wrapped itself around but technically speaking, the ones above were the highlights.

I finally decided to go with Linux Mint for my OS of choice for general use. I like the way it includes most everything I find necessary for my use and it runs the venerable Ubuntu Linux under the hood so I know that with what Mint adds, it’s all good. I have it running on my laptop as well as on one of my desktops. I also have this same desktop set up with Samba so all the machines on my network (Linux as well as Windoze) can share files and the attached printer. This last part is still a work in progress but it’s coming together.

I also bit the bullet and bought an OEM builder’s copy of Windows 7 64 bit for the other desktop. I’m still debating whether that was a good idea because I’m still running into issues with it. The 64 bit part is what is causing the most problems but I’m determined to work through them just because. So far, Linux works, Windows…..eh, it’s trying. :)

The job worries will unfortunately not go away anytime soon. Just the nature of the industry I work in so it’s something that’s going to hang around for a while to come. I’m blessed in that I still have a job at this point so that’s one thing to be happy about. I really feel bad for those who lost theirs and are struggling so much now so I take nothing for granted.

My hope for 2010 is that the economy gets to a point fast where folks will begin to see job opportunities open back up, technology keeps pace with demand, people will stop seeing Google as a 3-headed monster, local politicians will stop drinking their own cool-aid and keep their sticky fingers in their own pockets for a change and that I can finally lose some weight.

I sincerely wish a Happy New Year to each and every one of you and hope that 2010 will bring your dreams to fruition.

Poll: Would you be willing to pay for online content?

Recent news articles are suggesting that Google is beginning to come under attack of sorts with Microsoft urging news corporations to pull their content from Google’s index. There are already rumblings from News Corp as well as others that are starting to lean towards this option.

Is Microsoft this persuasive? Or just too good at being the ’school-yard bully’? Or is it that they see this as the best way to go after Google’s search business as Bing still ain’t cutting the mustard like they hoped? Seems like M/$’s usual way of doing business to me. We all know that Microsoft will stop at nothing to see to it that they are the kings of the hill for pretty much anything be it software, OS’s, search, etc. So, this smells like their unique way of stealing away business from Google.

This unofficial, unscientific poll is to see what you, the consumer would be willing to put up with. The poll will run until the end of the month so you have time to mull it over. :) Feel free to leave comments below as well! :)

Truly great support from Site5

Site5 Web HostingMost of you that read this blog have a web host that you use and like. Same goes for me here and I’ve been hosted by several good web hosts over the years. For the life of me, I can’t see myself moving from Site5 (where I’m presently hosted) as they just seem to have the best of the best working there.

For example: Had an issue this morning where apache became a problem on my server. My sites loaded slowly, if at all and a quick trip to Site5’s live chat revealed that apache was having some issues on my server. I was told that an Admin was looking into it and that things should begin to resolve normally in a few minutes. Which they did.

Around 10 minutes or so later, things reverted back to slow to no resolution for the sites again. This time, I submitted a ticket to Support and in around 30 minutes, give or take, the problem was corrected. That’s fast support!

So kudos to the Site5 Team and my heartfelt thanks for a job well done! If anyone out there reading this is on the hunt for a new web host for any reason, give Site5 a try. You’ll not find a better group of folks who care for you more than they do. Their pricing is competitive, their packages are great and they have THE best Support Team I’ve ever come across. ;)

It’s Time to get Angry

View of Wall Street, Manhattan.

Image via Wikipedia

Yeah, I know it’s not very technical or web design-ish nor even anything to do with Linux. But I just had to write this because it hits so close to home with me. My friends are my life just as my family is my life. When they hurt, I hurt. When they feel good with the world, so do I. In this case, we’re hurting pretty bad. Before you click away because this has nothing to do with my normal ramblings, do yourself a favor and keep reading. This affects you just as well as others in this nation.

I have a friend, who will remain nameless as he has enough to cope with now without anyone remotely recognizing his name here and calling him up to inquire what’s going on, has lost his business, his home, gone through bankruptcy, lost pretty much all of his earthly belongings and most importantly, may have lost his soul mate who has been with him for around 30 years. He’s been forced to move in with one of his kids and is doing what he can to try to bring income into the family once again.

This is a proud man who served in the Navy for this country and who had built up a business that employed not only he and his wife but several other family members. His company had been doing really well up until this economy tanked. This very same man spent many a tiring shift in a steel mill working an overhead crane and not one of those with the remote control. His shift was spent in a cab atop the crane in sweltering heat. This was one of his first jobs after marrying. The business that he and his wife started came soon after. Read the rest of this entry »

DNS settled and a lesson learned

Domain names, arranged in a tree, cut into zon...
Image via Wikipedia

It appears that the DNS has all but finished propagating for the site now which is a good thing. However, I did learn one valuable lesson in this migration. Make the migration with a Home backup, database backup and what else I needed. Not a full account backup. At least not in this case anyway.

Reason being is that my new web host for this site uses their own control panel. This isn’t bad mind you. It’s just that the actual control panel wasn’t there so to speak as the one from cpanel was instead. Seems the full backup I migrated over had some cpanel files in it that weren’t really needed but a quick email to Site5’s support team netted a fast reply with the issue taken care of.

That’s what I like about Site5’s Support Team. They work fast. Real fast!

So, now the site is moved with everything again under one ‘virtual roof’ so to speak and all is well with the world. Now we take you back to your regularly scheduled programming. ;)
