Re-evaluating my Social Network

Most people come up with some resolutions for the new year that most will never follow up on. They range from losing weight to saving more to doing better at something to who knows what else. We all tend to fall back on our set ways in a few weeks or so. I thought long and hard about what mine might be and decided on not spending as much time on the internet as I used to.

Now, THAT got your attention didn’t it? Actually, my intention is to eliminate the social networks that I gain no real benefit from in all reality. I won’t go on to mention them all here as most of the readers of this humble blog don’t even know where to find me on them. My reasoning however, is this: Why take precious time out of the day to scroll endlessly over postings that really have no interest for me in the first place? One such social network that has blossomed has become such a hodge-podge of add-on applications that it’s more like a carnival than a social networking app. But, hey! To each their own.

My idea is simple. To cull the networks that I’ve not really gained much benefit from in the past year. To keep the ones that have kept my interests peaked and inspired me to try new things as well as learn more about what interests me. This is not to say I’ve become snide or elitist but, more to the point, I’m becoming more focused on my interests and trying to fine tune them.

I like Twitter for it’s ‘real time’ updates. You can’t beat it IMHO. As things happen, it hits this social network almost immediately. I like my Google Reader for more in depth information that I can catch up on when I have the time. Tweetmeme has it’s place in my bookmarks as well for the technology tag. Alltop is a source for stories that cater to my interests too.

Music and Video interests are focused on Youtube, Hulu and Last.fm Pandora for the time being.

There are some blogs that I subscribe to that interest me in this mix that have to do with SEO, web hosting, GNU/Linux and friends whom I’ve made it a point to keep up with as their families grow and experience things in life. These I won’t let go of as they mean something to me.

It’s the time-wasters that I have nothing for anymore. The ones whose creators have been quoted as not caring for your privacy anyway, the ones that don’t do much more than leave another place on the ‘net for your private information to get scraped are on the chopping block. ;)

I may come across something that might prove interesting but it’ll be on a trial basis for a while to see if it actually allows me to benefit from it. Guess that may sound odd to some but hey! Like I said previously, I’m in this to gain knowledge and to share it when I can. I’d expect the same from anyone else.

So, if you had seen me on some other social network and now you don’t, my account closed…guess that means it was one of those that got the axe today and that I won’t be back. I kind of doubt that I’ll be missed. ;)

Thoughts for the day

Kind of late in some circles but when it hits, you better start typing, right? Well, it hit so here we go…

Am going to try out this program called Artisteer tomorrow that designs Wordpress themes, Drupal and Joomla as well. Figure if it’s as good as I’ve been hearing, I might as well design my own theme to go here and see what it’s got under the hood too. I like designing pages anyway so this will give me a chance to have a go at designing themes for Wordpress too.

If I can get my Windows machine to play nice, I’ll load some good movies in it in the next few days for watching later.  I tend to use it mostly for design work, watching movies, and listening to music sometimes (although I prefer my Linux machine for the music duties but the other has the surround sound). For work and other tasks, I prefer my Linux machine hands down as it tends to be much more stable without any window freezes, crashes and such.

And last but not least, I need to wash my car. Poor bugger is dirty! LOL :)

The world according to…me!

Evil InsideThe world as we know it is still here. News at 11. Nothing new, nothing unusual, same old, same old…people are still doing what they do best. Killing each other over power and wealth. No surprise.

Pretty damn cold, huh? Well, look back at our history. Not just America’s but the world’s history too. We’ve managed to specialize in getting much better at killing each other over the years.

  • We find a cure for the common cold yet? Nope. No money in that.
  • We develop a cure for cancer yet? Nahh. Too much money to be made in radiation and chemo.
  • We getting anywhere near saving Darfur from annihilation? Nope. No money in that either.
  • Where are we in helping to feed the starving people of the world? Change that channel!
  • How about the wars we keep sending people to because of some idiot politician who swears that it’s a just cause? Yep, we’re still there!
  • What about outlandish prices for products that are used every day of our lives like gas and groceries? Oh, those are supply and demand prices and demand always trumps supply.
  • What about idiot government entities that think buying out dumbass companies is the way to save the economy? We can do it! We’re Bob the Builder!

These are but a smattering of what’s going on in the world and it’s bullsh!t and we all know it. I’m sure that many of our deceased families are rolling in their graves with this crap that’s going on now. Hell! Stop this bad bus-ride and let me off! I’ll take the next one that has some sense.

If we put forth the effort to make things better for ALL of us on this planet, just how many lives do you think would be saved? How fast would a cure for many diseases become available? How many smiling faces would be looking up at the morning sun because they actually had a meal? Where would we be without greed and power corrupting every decision made in our lives?

If you can’t agree that we as a people would be better off, then you must already be a politician or want to be real bad.

Don’t mistake my tirade one minute. I’m no pacifist. You steal from me, I’ll see you go to jail. You kill me, I’ll see you in Hell.

I’m not looking for some kind of unrealistic expectation. This is a possibility we all can achieve. We just have to start making the right decisions at the right time without thinking of what it can do for us first.

Think of our kids, our grand-kids and their children. They will be the one’s who inherit what we leave behind. Think of them.
